Summary
The Spirit of Namibia is a ship that, under contract from the De Beers diamond exporting concern, trawls the waters off the coast of South Africa, looking for gems that can be harvested for market. Filmmakers Adi Barash and Ruthie Shatz spent three months aboard the ship as the captain and crew searched for diamonds; during the voyage they found antagonism between the crew and the ship's security staff, strong racial tension between the South African management and the Namibian crew, unease among the Cuban captain and kitchen staff who are caught in the middle, and fatigue and boredom as the long and tiresome journey wore on. Diamonds and Rust is a document of the filmmakers' eye-opening experience aboard The Spirit of Namibia; the film received its North American premiere at the 2001 San Francisco Film Festival.
