Summary
This documentary describes Trobriand society without mentioning the two things that perhaps every anthropology student would expect: the kula and Malinowski. Instead, they dwell on other Trobriand social practices – female exchange, mourning practices, cricket, magic, competition between male chiefs, marriage, Christianity on the island – to provide a picture of modern Trobriand society. Further, because they include images of Trobrianders moving on and off the island, they suggest that Trobriand culture is far from bounded. Unlike many other anthropological films that revisit the field sites of famous anthropologists (particularly the Strangers Abroad series), this film distinguishes between the natives as represented in the famous ethnography and those living now.
